Public Liability Insurance
What is Public Liability Insurance (PL)?
If members of the public or customers come to your premises or you go to theirs then you need Public Liability Insurance. It is vital protection for you and your business. Public Liability Insurance provides legal protection, in the form of legal fees and other legal expenses and protects you against any claim that a member of the general public may have against you for injury or loss to them or their property caused by your business.
Why do I need Public Liability Insurance?
If you are providing goods and services to the general public and other businesses you could potentially be blamed for an injury, damage or loss. Public Liability Insurance covers any awards of damages given to a member of the public. Even if you work from home but occasionally have customers visit or you visit their premises it is still advisable to have Public Liability Insurance.
Examples of claims made under Public Liability insurance
A customer comes in to your shop but trips up on a loose bit of flooring. Public Liability Insurance would cover your business if the customer claimed for injuries sustained as a result of the un-maintained floor.
You are a self-employed carpet cleaner. Whilst at a customer's site, you accidentally knock over a cup of coffee, and the contents pour down the back of a computer, damaging it beyond repair. Public Liability Insurance would cover any claim from the customer.
